Anti-discrimination Guildelines

Anti-Discrimination Guidelines (Circulated first time on July 31, 2023)

IIT Bombay aims to foster high inclusivity within the campus and encourages students to bond with each other irrespective of caste, religion, or socio-economic background. The institute implements, and is proud to implement, the reservation policy of the Constitution in both letter and spirit. The institute strives to provide equal opportunities to all admitted students and ensures that they do not face any discrimination—whether from faculty members, staff, or fellow students.

Thus:

  • It is inappropriate to ask a fellow student what birth or admission category they belong to. Such questions may result in conscious or subconscious bias.
  • It is equally inappropriate for anyone (students, staff, or faculty) to ask students about their JEE (Advanced) ranks, GATE scores, or any other information that may reveal caste or related aspects. Even if asked out of curiosity, such questions can have a negative impact and may be perceived as discriminatory.
  • To help the institute maintain an inclusive atmosphere, students are strongly encouraged to bond over common interests like departments, sports, music, movies, hometowns, hobbies, etc.
  • It is strictly prohibited to exchange or forward any messages—including jokes—that:
    • Are abusive, hateful, casteist, or sexist.
    • Exhibit bigotry based on religion or sexual orientation.
    • Can be construed as harassment or bullying.

This includes all forms of communication—whether on WhatsApp, Facebook, email, or in person.

  • Violations can lead to severe punishment.
  • Politeness and sensitivity towards others’ feelings is expected from all members of the community.
